Bishop's Park

Bishop's Park sits just outside Carmarthen and serves up a proper dose of Welsh countryside without the need for hiking boots and a packed lunch. It's a nature reserve that combines woodland, meadow and riverside habitat - the sort of place where you can actually spot things rather than just walking through scenery.

The park works best for a couple of hours of gentle wandering. Bird enthusiasts will find it rewarding, particularly if you time it right for migration seasons. Families with younger kids appreciate the easy access and the fact there's usually something happening - rabbits, pheasants, the occasional heron by the water. It's not dramatic or vast, but that's rather the point. You won't spend four hours here, but you also won't feel short-changed.

Being so close to Carmarthen town centre means it slots nicely into a wider day out. Most of the nearby caravan parks - Quarry Lodge, Lan Farm Glamping, Coedhirion Farm and the others dotted around Towy Valley - use it as a morning stop rather than a destination in itself. That's fair assessment, really.

Access appears free and unrestricted, though opening times aren't always clear. Best approach is to ring ahead or simply show up in daylight. Winter visits can be muddy and a bit bleak, but spring and early summer transform it into something rather more inviting. Don't expect facilities or formal car parks - this is very much a local spot, kept simple and genuine.
