Bitham Brook

Tucked away in the Wiltshire countryside near Westbury, this small lake offers a proper slice of rural tranquillity without the crowds you'll find at bigger water features. The walk around takes about 20 minutes at a gentle pace, making it perfect for families with little ones or anyone after a peaceful stroll.

Fishing enthusiasts will find decent spots along the banks, though you'll want to check locally about permits. The water attracts a fair bit of wildlife - we spotted herons, kingfishers and plenty of ducks during our visit in spring. Early morning is your best bet for birdwatching before the day walkers arrive.

Don't expect dramatic mountain backdrops or Instagram-worthy vistas. This is countryside walking at its most understated - rolling fields, hedgerows and that lovely sense of having the place mostly to yourself. The path can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are wise.

If you're staying at Center Parcs Longleat Forest or one of the camping sites around Westbury, it makes a pleasant change of pace from busier attractions. Allow an hour including a picnic stop by the water's edge. Nothing groundbreaking, but sometimes that's exactly what you need.
