Westbury Lake

The lake itself is the draw here - a proper natural water body that pulls in walkers and birdwatchers in equal measure. You'll find yourself on decent paths around the perimeter, with the water reflecting whatever the Wiltshire sky decides to throw at it that day. In spring and autumn, the bird life picks up noticeably. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting anything beyond the obvious ducks and geese.

It's best suited to anyone after a straightforward walk rather than dramatic scenery. The Westbury area itself won't set your heart racing - it's a working market town, not a tourist trap - but that's rather the point. You get real countryside without the crowds. An hour is enough to loop the lake unless you're doing serious birdwatching, though staying longer won't hurt if the light's good.

Families will manage fine here, though there's nothing designed specifically for kids to do. Teenagers might find it a bit dull without the distraction of facilities. Serious walkers often combine it with wider Wiltshire walks rather than making it a destination on its own.

If you're staying at Hunters Moon over in Warminster, it's only about five miles away - close enough for a morning sortie before heading elsewhere. The admission is free, which is reason enough to stop by if you're in the region. Best visited when the paths are dry, obviously.
