Black Dog Hill

Standing at 261 metres, this grassy summit offers surprisingly expansive views across the Wiltshire countryside without the crowds you'll find at more famous peaks. The walk up from Warminster takes about 45 minutes through rolling farmland, though the final stretch gets properly steep.

Walkers and families with older children will appreciate the reward at the top - on clear days you can spot the Mendips to the west and even catch glimpses of Glastonbury Tor. It's not spectacular, mind you, but there's something satisfying about having a decent vantage point largely to yourself.

The hill sits conveniently close to Center Parcs Longleat Forest and several other holiday parks around Warminster, making it a good leg-stretcher if you're staying in the area. Pack a flask and some sandwiches - the summit makes for a proper picnic spot when the weather's kind.

Best tackled in the morning before the afternoon heat builds up, and definitely avoid after heavy rain when the paths turn into a mud bath. Dogs love the open grassland at the top, though keep them on leads near the livestock.

It's free, naturally, and you could easily combine it with a trip to nearby Longleat if you're making a day of it. Allow two hours return from the town centre.
