Clear Wood

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you follow the meandering paths through this lovely patch of Wiltshire woodland. Clear Wood sits just outside Warminster, offering proper woodland walking without the crowds that descend on more famous spots like Longleat Forest nearby.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore here - fallen logs make natural climbing frames and there's space to run about safely. The paths are well-defined but not overly manicured, giving you that proper forest feel. Dog walkers love it too, though you'll want to keep leads handy as it borders farmland.

Expect to spend an hour or two here comfortably, longer if the children discover den-building materials or you fancy a proper ramble. The woodland changes character with the seasons - bluebells in spring, golden canopy in autumn - so it's worth revisiting throughout the year.

Location-wise, it's brilliantly placed for those staying at Center Parcs Longleat Forest or any of the holiday parks dotted around this corner of Wiltshire. Makes a nice contrast to the more structured attractions at Longleat itself, and it's free - always a bonus when you're on a family holiday. Just bring sensible shoes as it can get muddy after rain.
