Blackbellie Hill

The walk up Blackbellie Hill is straightforward enough, but the views across Dumfries and Galloway make it worth the effort. You're looking at rolling moorland, farmland dropping away towards the coast, and on a clear day the hills beyond Castle Douglas form a proper backdrop. It's not a slog - maybe 20 minutes up from the car park if you're taking it steady.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic or Alpine, but it's honest terrain with genuine open country around you. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the walk itself more interesting than the summit itself, which is just a trig point and views. Allow an hour if you want to sit about and take photos. There's no facilities at the top, so bring water.

The peak works well as part of a wider Lowlands ramble during a holiday park stay. You're close enough to Kippford View or Gorsebank for an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's the sort of place you do because you're already staying in the area, not because you'd drive an hour specially to see it. Best visited when the light's decent - grey drizzle happens often enough round here that it's worth waiting for a better day.
