Blackgang Viewpoint

The southern edge of the Isle of Wight drops away dramatically at Blackgang, and this viewpoint delivers proper views across the Channel towards the French coast on clear days. You're standing on some of the most unstable cliffs in Britain here - the whole landscape is actively eroding, which sounds alarming but makes for genuinely striking scenery. The lookout itself is straightforward: find a spot along the clifftop path near Ventnor and take in the sweep of water and distant land.

It's a short stop rather than a destination you'll spend hours at, which suits most visitors fine. Walkers love it because the coastal path is excellent through this stretch, and the views reward the effort of getting down here. Photographers should arrive before mid-afternoon when the light gets properly golden. On grey days it's less inspiring, so timing matters.

The whole area is free and accessible year-round, though winter storms can make the path slippery. Allow 30 minutes to an hour if you're pairing it with a longer clifftop walk. From here you can easily reach Grange Farm Camping and Cottages or Sibbecks Farm Glamping if you're based locally - neither is far, and this works well as a morning excursion before settling in at your holiday park. Rusty Meadow Pop Up Campsite is similarly close if you've gone for that option.

Honestly? It's worth a detour if you're down this end of the island, but don't drive specially from Sandown expecting a major attraction. Come for the walk, stay for the views.
