Blackhouse Wood Nature Reserve

Ancient woodland paths wind through this lovely slice of native forest just outside Worcester, where oak and ash trees tower above a carpet of bluebells in spring. Blackhouse Wood feels properly wild - none of the manicured nonsense you get in some nature reserves. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent walking boots are essential if you're planning more than a quick stroll.

Families with young children will find the main trails manageable, though toddlers might struggle with some of the uneven ground. Dog walkers absolutely love this place - plenty of space for four-legged friends to explore safely. Bird watchers should bring binoculars; the woodland attracts a good variety of species throughout the year.

Expect to spend an hour or two if you're doing the full circuit, though you could easily make it a quick half-hour walk if time's tight. The reserve connects well with a holiday at nearby parks like Hop Pickers Rural Retreats or Malvern View, both within three miles. It's the sort of place that's worth visiting whatever the weather - atmospheric in mist, lovely in sunshine, and properly atmospheric when autumn leaves crunch underfoot. Free access makes it a wallet-friendly addition to any Worcestershire break.
