Hanging Bank Coppice

A proper woodland walk through ancient coppice just outside Worcester, Hanging Bank Coppice is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days you're walking in dappled shade. It's small - you won't spend more than 45 minutes here unless you're moving at a snail's pace - but that's rather the point.

The coppice woodland itself is the draw. If you know anything about woodland management, you'll spot the signs of traditional coppicing - the multi-stemmed regrowth from cut stools that gives these forests their distinctive character. For families, it's a gentle option when everyone's tired of major attractions; kids can burn off energy without needing an hour-long hike. Serious walkers might find it a bit brief, though it connects reasonably well to nearby paths if you want to extend things.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no signage to speak of - you're on your own with a map and your instincts. That's refreshing, though it means checking ahead if you can. It's free to access, or at least it has been historically. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Malvern View, Redhill Holidays, or The Rookery Woods are all within three or four miles - this works as a half-morning diversion rather than a main event. Best in spring when the woodland floor erupts with bluebells and wild garlic.
