The moment you walk through Blackwell's heavy wooden doors, you're transported straight into the turn-of-the-century mindset of a wealthy Manchester industrialist. This isn't some dusty museum - it's a proper Arts and Crafts house, built in 1900, where every detail from the hand-painted tiles to the custom-designed furniture screams William Morris ideology. The rooms flow naturally from one to the next, and you can actually picture people living here rather than just gawping at velvet ropes.

What makes it special is the completeness. Bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens - all done with that meticulous Arts and Crafts attention to craft and honest materials. The library is particularly good, all dark wood and thoughtful design. Families won't struggle here; kids old enough to appreciate the weird and wonderful designs find it more interesting than your average stately home. Allow a solid two hours minimum, longer if you're into the period.

Located just outside Lindeth on Lake Windermere's eastern shore, it's brilliantly placed if you're camping or glamping at any of the local parks - Lake District Woodland Pods is barely a mile away, and Parkdean Fallbarrow sits just down the road. The house itself is free to wander the grounds, though the interiors require a ticket. Spring and early autumn beat the summer crowds. It works best paired with a walk around Wray Castle or a proper lakeside stomp rather than as a standalone afternoon, but as part of a Lake District base it's genuinely worth the detour.
