Blaen-Y-Glyn Hill

The walk up Blaen-Y-Glyn Hill rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland, though it's not the sort of peak that'll take your breath away in the dramatic sense. What I mean is: the ascent itself is gentle enough, rolling through quiet farm country just outside Llanidloes, but the payoff is a wide-open perspective rather than a jaw-dropping vista.

This is walker territory, frankly. The hill sits at the edge of Mid Wales' moorland plateau, so you get the kind of rolling, almost empty landscape that makes you feel genuinely far from anywhere. On a clear day you can pick out distant ridges and valleys folding away towards the Snowdonia direction. It takes a good hour or so from Llanidloes to get up and back down again, depending on your starting point and pace.

Geologically it's unremarkable - you won't find rare rock formations or dramatic geological features here. But that's precisely why it appeals: it's a real walker's hill rather than a tourism box-ticking exercise. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might get restless on the exposed moorland stretches.

If you're camped at Glangwy Farm Camping or one of the other sites within a few miles of Llanidloes, this works as a solid half-day outing before heading back for dinner. Pair it with walks around the Clywedog Valley or a mooch around Llanidloes town itself. Go mid-week if you can - weekends draw more crowds to the area.
