Cefn-Hafod-Wen

The walk up Cefn-Hafod-Wen rewards you with proper views across the Clywedog Valley and beyond. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards - nothing dramatic - but the path from Llanidloes is straightforward enough and the summit gives you a real sense of having earned something.

You're looking at rolling moorland once you're up there, with the kind of wide-open vista that makes you understand why people bother with Mid Wales hills. The ascent takes about an hour from town on a decent track. It's not technical walking - more a steady plod than anything requiring proper boots, though decent footwear helps after rain.

Best visited on a clearer day. Winter mist rolls in here proper quickly and you'll see sod all. Spring or autumn tends to work well. Families with older kids (say, eight upwards) will manage it without complaint, though younger ones might find it a bit of a trudge without the payoff of a cafe or viewpoint facility at the top.

If you're based at one of the local parks - Glangwy Farm Camping is closest at just over two miles away - this works as a half-day excursion. Pair it with a wander around Llanidloes itself, which has enough character to justify poking around for an hour or so. Clywedog Riverside Holiday Home Park and the others sit within reasonable striking distance too, making this a solid addition to a broader walking itinerary rather than a destination in itself.
