Maenhinon

The walk up Maenhinon rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland, though it's not one of those dramatic peaks that stops you in your tracks. From Llanidloes, it's easily reached and takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get up there depending on your pace and the path conditions - which can be boggy after rain, fair warning.

Once you're at the top, you get a decent panorama of the Mid Wales landscape. Nothing Instagram-famous, but the kind of vista that makes sense when you're standing on it. On a clear day you can see across proper open country. The summit itself isn't fussy - no trig point drama, just moorland that goes on.

This is a solid choice for walkers who want a straightforward hill without the scramble, or families with teenagers who can handle uneven ground. The route isn't technical, though boots matter more than trainers. Allow yourself a couple of hours round trip if you're going at a leisurely pace with breaks.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Red Kite Touring is closest at under three miles - Maenhinon fits well into a walking-focused break without being the centrepiece. It's the sort of hill you do on a morning before heading into Llanidloes for lunch rather than a destination trip. Worth the effort if you're already in the area exploring the Clywedog Valley, less worth a special journey if you're after dramatic summit views.
