The moment you round the bend near Pitlochry and Blair Castle comes into view, you understand why this place has dominated the landscape for nearly 800 years. It's proper impressive - a massive white-harled fortress with enough turrets and battlements to satisfy any castle fixation, surrounded by formal gardens that actually repay a wander rather than just existing for show.

Inside, the rooms tell the story of Scottish aristocracy without feeling like a dusty museum lecture. There's real furniture, actual weapons, portraits that glare at you. Kids tend to grip on through the dungeons and ghost stories, though older children and adults will spend considerably longer in the library and tapestry rooms. The gardens are the trump card in summer - 25 acres of woodland walks, herbaceous borders, and open parkland where you can genuinely lose an hour without trying.

The whole visit takes a solid three to four hours if you're not rushing. You'll want to allow extra time if the weather's decent and you fancy sitting by the water or exploring the lower grounds properly. It costs to get in, but it's worth budgeting for if you're basing yourself at Blair Castle Caravan Park just down the road - convenience counts for a lot on a family holiday. Faskally Woods Holiday Park, a few miles south, is also well-positioned if you're mixing this with walks along the Tummel Valley. Late spring through early autumn is the sweet spot; winter can feel a bit bleak, though that's when it looks most dramatic.
