Bocketts Farm Park

There's a working farm just outside Leatherhead where you can actually get your hands dirty - or at least your kids can. Bocketts Farm Park lets you wander around proper farmland, meet the animals, and understand how food gets from field to table without any of the patronising commentary you'd get at a theme park.

The setup is straightforward. You'll see cattle, sheep, and whatever else they're keeping in the paddocks that day. There's usually a chance to help with feeding or handling animals, which means children stay engaged for a solid couple of hours rather than the usual thirty minutes of boredom. Parents can watch from the sidelines with a cup of tea, or get involved if you're that way inclined.

It works brilliantly if you're camping nearby - Norbury Park is literally a ten-minute drive away, and Embers Camping near Polesden Lacey offers a proper base for exploring the whole Surrey Hills area. After a morning at the farm, you could easily head up into the National Landscape for some proper walking.

The farm is best visited mid-week if possible. Weekends get rammed with school groups and birthday parties, which kills the peaceful farmyard vibe. Check ahead for opening times and admission prices - these things change, and you don't want to turn up expecting to spend the afternoon only to find it's shut for a private event.

Realistic expectation? It's not thrilling, but it's genuine and honest. Kids learn something actual.
