Norbury Park

The chalk downs around Leatherhead roll on for miles, and Norbury Park sits right in the heart of them - a proper countryside escape that feels miles from anywhere despite being close enough to the town for a quick afternoon visit. You're looking at open parkland with woodland patches, valley views that stretch further than feels reasonable for Surrey, and enough footpaths to keep walkers happy for a solid few hours without breaking a sweat.

It's the sort of place where you can potter about without any real plan and still have a decent time. The walking is accessible - nothing too strenuous - though the paths do dip and climb enough to feel like proper exercise. On a clear day the views across the Mole Valley are worth the trip alone, and in spring the place comes alive with bluebells and wild garlic that actually smells as good as it sounds.

Families with younger kids will manage fine for a couple of hours; older walkers and countryside types will find themselves coming back. The park sits handily between Embers Camping at Polesden Lacey and the broader Surrey Hills National Landscape, so it slots in nicely as a day stop if you're based at any of the local holiday parks. No fancy facilities that I'm aware of, which is rather the point. Bring a packed lunch, decent shoes, and go early on weekends to dodge the crowds. Free to access and genuinely one of those places that gives you proper Surrey countryside without the twee factor.
