Bodmin Railway - Boscarne Junction Station

The old railway line through Bodmin brings real joy to anyone who remembers steam trains, or who's simply fascinated by how Victorians moved about. Boscarne Junction Station sits at the heart of the Bodmin Railway operation - it's the main hub where you'll find restored carriages, steam locomotives (when they're running), and the sort of volunteers who genuinely know their stuff. The station building itself has that proper heritage feel, all red brick and period detail, and staff take their time explaining what you're looking at rather than rushing you through.

You can walk around the platforms freely during operating hours and get up close to the engines. Day trips on the vintage trains run seasonally - Sundays mainly, sometimes Saturdays depending on what's on - and the journey takes you through decent Cornish countryside toward Bodmin town. Allow a good three to four hours if you're planning to explore the station, watch a train depart, and maybe grab something to eat at the cafe. Admission to the station itself is free; you only pay if you want to ride the train.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader Bodmin visit. The town's got the moor just north of it, museums if the weather turns foul, and reasonable pubs. For campers, Mena Farm is closest at just over three miles away, making it easy to base yourself there and pop over to the railway without fuss. History enthusiasts and families with children under ten tend to get the most from it. Adults without a railway fixation might find an hour's visit sufficient.
