Fair Park

Fair Park sits just outside Bodmin and is a genuine surprise if you're expecting another manicured country estate. It's a working nature reserve where the landscape actually feels alive - proper boggy moorland, wet woodland, the sort of place that rewards a muddy boot or two.

You'll wander through a mix of habitats here. The heathland sections are excellent for spotting adders and lizards if you're patient, while the wetter bits attract curlews and the occasional buzzard. It's not a formal gardens affair with viewing platforms and interpretive boards every fifty yards. This is raw enough to feel like genuine exploration.

Families with older kids who enjoy a proper walk will get far more from it than those expecting an easy stroll. The paths can be boggy and there's no café or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a meaningful circuit - it's not the sort of place where you're rushing between visitor hotspots.

What makes it work particularly well is the honesty of it. No false promises. You're visiting an actual working reserve, not a performance of nature. If you're camping at Camp De Lank just down the road, Fair Park is a brilliant half-day venture to get a genuine feel for what Cornish moorland actually looks like when humans aren't heavily directing the narrative. Bring good boots, and don't expect phone signal.
