Bonchurch Down

Standing at 106 metres above sea level, this grassy chalk downland gives you proper views across the English Channel without the crowds that plague other Isle of Wight viewpoints. The walk up from Bonchurch village is gentle enough for most families, though toddlers might need a piggyback for the final stretch.

What makes this spot special is the sense of space - you can see right across to the French coast on clear days, while behind you the island rolls away in gentle green folds. It's not dramatic in the way Tennyson Down is, but that's rather the point. This feels more like discovering your own private viewing platform.

Dedicated walkers will appreciate that Bonchurch Down connects to longer coastal path routes, but even casual visitors from nearby Shanklin will find the 20-minute climb well worth the effort. Early morning is best - you'll often have the place to yourself, and the light across the water is lovely.

Families staying at Lower Hyde Holiday Park or Appuldurcombe Gardens Holiday Park will find it makes for a nice afternoon excursion, especially if combined with exploring Bonchurch's thatched cottages below. Allow an hour for the round trip, longer if you want to properly soak up those Channel views.
