St Boniface Down

Scrambling up to 241 metres, this grassy hilltop claims the title of the Isle of Wight's highest point - though you'd be forgiven for thinking it's more of a gentle bump than a proper peak. The views from the summit are properly spectacular on a clear day, sweeping across the Solent to the mainland and down the island's southern coastline towards the Needles.

Walkers will love the network of footpaths that crisscross the down, with several routes starting from Shanklin below. The terrain is easy going - think rolling grassland rather than challenging climbs - making it suitable for families with older children who don't mind a decent uphill slog. The area is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so keep dogs on leads during bird nesting season.

There's no admission fee and you can roam freely, though parking near the base can be tricky in summer. Allow two hours for a leisurely walk to the top and back, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding downland. The exposed position means it can be bitterly cold in winter, but that same openness delivers those cracking panoramic views.
