Borley Wood

Dense woodland that creeps right up to the edge of Cambridge - Borley Wood is the sort of place locals keep to themselves. You're walking through proper ancient forest here, the kind where the light gets filtered green and the ground squelches underfoot even weeks after rain. Paths wind through without much fanfare, and that's rather the point.

It's brilliant for walkers who want something a bit wilder than the typical park loop. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter and moss; in spring the bluebells are worth the trip alone. Families with older kids do well here - there's enough space to let them ramble without worrying they'll wander into a theme park queue. Younger children might lose interest after 45 minutes unless you're making a game of spotting birds and insects.

There's no visitor centre or cafe, which keeps the crowds down. Just turn up and walk. Give yourself a couple of hours if you're doing a proper explore, or 45 minutes for a quick circuit. Early morning is best - you'll have the place almost to yourself.

It slots nicely between Cambridge day trips and time at Piggles Retreat if you're doing a wider Cambridgeshire circuit. Not dramatic or photo-heavy, but genuinely restorative.
