Bottom Wood Nature Reserve

Walking into Bottom Wood feels like slipping into someone's secret back pocket - it's proper woodland, the sort where you can actually hear yourself think. This nature reserve just outside High Wycombe is a straightforward local treasure: a mix of ancient woodland and open glades where the canopy does most of the heavy lifting.

You'll find bluebells in spring (the main draw), but it's worth visiting any time if you fancy a decent woodland walk without the crowds. The paths wind through beech and oak, and on a quiet morning you might spot deer or catch sight of woodland birds. The whole circuit takes about an hour, give or take - not arduous, just proper forest wandering. There's no visitor centre or fancy facilities, which is rather the point.

This works brilliantly for families with kids old enough to handle uneven terrain, and walkers after a genuine natural space rather than a manicured park. It's the sort of place where you go to breathe rather than to tick boxes.

If you're staying at Cholsey Grange CL just down the road, this is your neighbourhood walk - a 15-minute drive max. Even from White Mark Glamping further out, it's worth the effort. Entry is free and there's no fussing about opening hours - you simply pitch up and go. Spring's the obvious choice for the flowers, but autumn light through the beech is rather special too.
