The M40 corridor has brought corporate headquarters and commuter-belt prosperity to this Buckinghamshire market town, creating an odd mix of medieval parish churches and glass office blocks.

High Street shopping feels typical for a medium-sized town - decent but not thrilling. Far better to head into the surrounding Chiltern Hills, where proper countryside starts just minutes from the centre. Saunderton station offers direct rail links to London and Birmingham, making this area surprisingly accessible for a rural escape.

Chinnor Hill Nature Reserve provides the best walking in the immediate area, with chalk downland trails and views across the Oxfordshire plain. The reserve's butterfly population is particularly impressive in summer. Park Wood offers gentler strolling closer to town, while the more adventurous can tackle the bridleways through Frenche's Wood.

History buffs will find Saunderton Lee's archaeological remains worth the short journey south. The medieval Crucifix near the town centre tells a different story entirely - High Wycombe's coaching inn past when this was a vital stop on the London to Oxford route. Holy Trinity church anchors the old town, though it's rather overshadowed by the retail parks these days.

Lodge Hill provides the area's finest viewpoint, especially on clear days when the Chiltern ridge stretches into the distance. Getting there involves a bit of a trek, but the panoramic views across three counties make it well worth the effort.

Staying at one of the nearby rural campsites makes perfect sense for exploring both the town and the broader Chilterns. You're close enough to nip into High Wycombe for supplies or a proper pub lunch, yet far enough out to enjoy genuine countryside peace.
