Park Wood

Park Wood sits just outside High Wycombe, a proper chunk of ancient woodland that's been there long enough to matter. Walking through it feels like stepping back several centuries - the trees are thick and old, the ground soft underfoot, and there's genuine quiet once you're even fifty metres in from the car park.

It's the sort of place walkers come for without fanfare. The paths are well-maintained but not overdone, running through mixed woodland with enough variety to keep things interesting. You're looking at maybe an hour's gentle amble, though you can easily stretch it if you've got the time. Families with young kids will manage fine - nothing too steep, nothing too demanding - though there's not much in the way of facilities or attractions once you're in, so don't expect playgrounds or tea rooms.

History types might get a kick out of it. These woods have been worked for centuries, and you can spot the signs if you know what you're looking for - old coppice stools, the ghosts of ancient management. It's the kind of place that rewards paying attention.

Coming from any of the camping spots nearby - Bella Vista is closest at under three miles - it's a useful leg-stretcher rather than a full day out. Worth fitting in if you're camping locally and fancy a proper woodland walk without the tourist circus. Spring's lovely here when the bluebells come through, though honestly, it works year-round. Free access, no nonsense.
