Bowber Head Farm Nature Reserve

The walk up to Bowber Head Farm is steep and boggy in patches, but you get proper rewarded once you're there. It's essentially a fell-top nature reserve on the eastern edge of the Pennines, just a few miles south of Kirkby Stephen, offering sweeping views across upper Wensleydale and the Eden Valley beyond.

On a clear day - and you need to pick your weather carefully here - you can see for miles. The reserve itself is moorland and fell pasture rather than woodland, so there's minimal shelter, but that's precisely what makes it work. Red grouse kick up from the heather. Golden plover breed here. If you're into upland birds and getting away from the crowds, you'll find your people. Families with young legs will enjoy it; anyone expecting a gentle stroll won't.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities. It's free to access and as wild as the Pennines get. Allow a good two hours for the full experience, including the climb and a proper look around at the top. Visit between April and August to catch the breeding birds at their busiest.

If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods nearby, Bowber Head makes an excellent half-day expedition - challenging enough to feel like proper fell walking, close enough that you're not spending the whole day travelling. Kirkby Stephen itself is worth a night, but the reserve is the real draw for anyone who actually enjoys the Pennines on their own terms.
