Winton Park

Winton Park sits just outside Kirkby Stephen and gives you a proper sense of what the Eden Valley landscape is all about - moorland, woodland, and that particular shade of green you only get in Cumbria after rain. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, so come here expecting to walk, look for birds, and maybe spot a red squirrel if you're lucky rather than expecting signage and visitor facilities.

The park works best for walkers and anyone genuinely interested in moorland ecology. Birdwatchers do well here too - the mix of habitats means you'll see curlews, lapwings, and various warblers depending on season. If you've got young kids expecting a playground or cafe, look elsewhere; if they're the type who'll spend an hour turning over stones looking for beetles, they'll be absorbed for ages.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, more if you're the slow-walking, stop-often type. There's no charge that we're aware of, though it's worth checking ahead as reserve access policies can shift. Autumn and spring are the most rewarding times - winter can be bleak, summer sometimes brings midges.

Stay at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road and you're perfectly positioned. It's a fifteen-minute walk away, so genuinely convenient. Wild Rose Holiday Park over in the wider area gives you more choice if those pods are full. Either way, Winton Park slots nicely into a broader Pennine walking trip rather than standing alone as your main attraction.
