Bowl Barrow

Bronze Age burial mounds don't announce themselves loudly. Bowl Barrow, near Ellesmere in Shropshire, is a modest earthwork - a low dome of earth that's easily walked past if you're not looking for it. But that's rather the point. Stand on top and you're standing on someone's grave from around 3,500 years ago, which does make you pause.

The barrow itself is unexcavated, so there's no museum display or interpretation board telling you what's inside. What you get instead is the genuine article: a Bronze Age monument in the landscape, much as it would have been when first raised. It's the kind of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and walkers who like their history served without commentary. Kids under about twelve will likely find it underwhelming - it's a hill, basically, and without the story spelled out, it doesn't grip.

Access appears to be freely available, though there's no official visitor infrastructure. Allow twenty minutes maximum, unless you're combining it with a longer walk through the Shropshire countryside, which makes sense given the caravan parks dotted around Ellesmere - Colemere and Fernwood are both within reach. The landscape here is quiet and undramatic, proper rural, which suits this kind of visit. Don't expect crowds or facilities. Do expect to feel properly connected to something very old.
