Ellesmere Point

The walk up Ellesmere Point rewards you with proper views across Shropshire's lake country, though calling it a peak is generous - it's more of a gentle rise from the town of Ellesmere itself. Still, at around 200 metres elevation, it's enough to open up the landscape below. You get sight lines across Ellesmere Lake and the surrounding meres, which is what makes the climb worthwhile rather than the summit itself.

It's a straightforward 30-minute walk from town, following reasonably clear paths through farmland and local woodland. Nothing technical, nothing that will challenge serious hill walkers, but it ticks a box nicely if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Colemere, Archers' Meadow, or Fernwood are all within easy striking distance. Families with older kids won't struggle. Younger children might find it a bit dull without the drama of a proper mountain.

The best approach is early morning when the light catches the water properly and you've got the place to yourself. Midweek in autumn works well. Bring a packed lunch if you're making an afternoon of it - there's nowhere to eat up top.

It's free to walk, obviously. As part of a wider exploration of Ellesmere's lakes and the surrounding countryside, it makes sense. Don't expect to spend more than two hours total. It's functional rather than spectacular, but the fact it's right on the town's doorstep means you can fit it around other activities without overthinking logistics.
