White Mere

Water so clear you can see straight to the bottom - that's what stops you in your tracks at White Mere. This glacial lake sits just outside Ellesmere in Shropshire, one of several meres dotted across the area that punch well above their weight for a afternoon out.

The lake itself is the main draw. You can walk the perimeter - takes about an hour at a leisurely pace - or simply park up and watch the water. It's genuinely peaceful, which counts for something. Birdwatchers get properly excited here; you'll spot wildfowl year-round and the place is relatively undisturbed compared to busier water spots. If you're the type to sit with a thermos and binoculars, you'll lose hours.

The walking's straightforward, nothing technical, so families with younger kids manage fine. There's something about standing at the water's edge and realising nothing much has changed here for centuries that makes it feel a bit special. Not Instagram-famous, which is partly why it works.

You're well-positioned if you're based at Colemere Caravan Park - it's practically on the doorstep - or any of the other parks within a few miles like Woodland Park Lodges. Combine it with a wander around Ellesmere proper and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Free to visit and open to the public year-round, though winter can be grim if weather turns. Spring and autumn are cracking times - the light's better and you won't be melting in the July heat.

Worth the detour? If you're in the area, absolutely. As a special journey? Only if you're serious about lakes and quiet.
