Bratton White Horse Car Park

The car park itself is nothing special - it's just tarmac and a few spaces on the side of a country lane near Westbury. But it's the jumping-off point for one of Wiltshire's most striking chalk figures, and that's where the real appeal lies. The Bratton White Horse sits high on the escarpment above, a massive 55-metre-long figure carved into the downland that you can see for miles around on a clear day.

Walking up from the car park takes about fifteen minutes, though the path is steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. Once you're up there, the views across the Vale of Pewsey are genuinely excellent - proper countryside rolling away in all directions. The horse itself dates back to 1778 (there was an earlier one on the same site), and it's been restored several times since. Standing right next to it gives you a sense of its scale that photographs never quite capture.

This works best for walkers and anyone interested in Wiltshire's landscape history. Kids might enjoy the climb and the views, but they'll be ready to leave once they've had a look around.
