Westbury Hill

Standing at 196 metres above sea level, this modest chalk hill delivers views that punch well above its weight. The famous white horse carved into its slopes draws most visitors, but the summit itself offers something different - proper panoramic vistas across the Salisbury Plain that stretch on clear days to the Mendips. It's a steady climb from Westbury town centre, taking about 20 minutes if you're reasonably fit.

Walkers will appreciate the network of paths that crisscross the hill, though families with young children might find the main ascent a bit of a slog. The reward at the top is worth it though - you can see for miles across Wiltshire's rolling countryside. Dog owners love it here; plenty of space to let them run free once you're away from the road.

Being open access land, there's no admission fee and you can visit any time of year. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light for photography, and you'll often have the place largely to yourself. If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Country View Camping or Brokerswood Holiday Park, it makes for a decent morning's outing before the heat of the day kicks in.
