Edington Hill

Standing at 732 feet above sea level, this chalk downland summit offers proper views across the Vale of Pewsey without the crowds you'll find at nearby Westbury White Horse. The walk up from Westbury takes about 45 minutes through rolling farmland and patches of beech woodland, with the gradient gentle enough for most walkers.

From the top, you'll spot Salisbury Plain stretching eastward and the Mendip Hills on clear days. It's particularly lovely in early morning when mist hangs in the valleys below. The hill forms part of the ancient Ridgeway path, so you're following footsteps that date back thousands of years.

Families with older children will enjoy the trek, though little ones might find the distance a bit much. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space to roam and the sheep are usually well-fenced. Allow two hours for the round trip from Westbury, or park closer if you can find the minor roads that wind partway up.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Westbury makes this an excellent morning adventure. Country View Camping sits closest at under two miles away, while Brokerswood Holiday Park offers more facilities if you're after entertainment beyond hillwalking. The summit's always accessible and completely free - just bring proper walking boots as the chalk can get slippery after rain.
