Bòrd Mòr

The walk up Bòrd Mòr is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across the Mull of Kintyre justify the effort. At 887 metres, it's not a massive hill, but the coastal panorama from the top is genuinely impressive - you're looking out over the Irish Sea with Arran and the Paps of Jura dominating the horizon. Allow roughly two hours return from the road end, depending on fitness. It's an open moorland push rather than a technical scramble, so families with older kids will manage it fine, though there's nothing to grab onto if the weather turns wet.

Argyll's hill country tends to draw serious walkers rather than casual strollers, and Bòrd Mòr fits that bill perfectly. Come on a windless morning if you can - the exposed ridge gets properly battered in poor conditions, and you'll want to linger at the top to actually see something. The nearest decent base is Campbeltown, about a 45-minute drive away, though the holiday parks closer by - Carradale Bay is exceptional, just 3.9 miles from the trailhead - make more sense logistically.

If you're touring the peninsula, combine it with a coastal walk lower down. The actual ascent itself is unremarkable - bog and grass mostly - but the isolation and the view reward those who make the trip. Winter climbers should note the exposure; summer walkers will find it a proper cracking spot for an afternoon out.
