Deucheran Hill

The walk up Deucheran Hill takes you across open moorland with views that stretch right across to Arran on a clear day. It's not exactly a Alpine scramble - the terrain is straightforward enough for anyone with decent legs and sturdy boots, though the wind can be fierce near the summit.

The hill sits just inland from Campbeltown, making it a natural half-day outing if you're based at Carradale Bay or Muasdale. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on fitness. The real draw is the perspective you get of the Mull of Kintyre peninsula from up there - suddenly the geography makes sense in a way it doesn't from the ground.

It's the sort of walk that rewards you without demanding much. No technical climbing, no scrambling through bog for hours. You get proper views for modest effort, which is exactly what many folk want when they're on a park holiday and fancy something beyond a coastal stroll.

Wear layers. The weather changes fast up here, and what looks settled in Campbeltown can turn brisk and damp within minutes. Best tackled in decent visibility - no point trudging up in mist. The walk itself is free, obviously, though the real cost is the drive out into Argyll from wherever you're staying. Worth it though if you want to feel like you've actually done something outdoors rather than just wandered about.
