Brighstone Down

The walk up Brighstone Down delivers proper views across the Isle of Wight's central chalk ridges - nothing spectacular in alpine terms, but on a clear day you can see right across to the Solent. It's a genuine working landscape too, with downland that actually feels lived-in rather than preserved behind velvet ropes.

This is a straightforward countryside walk rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. You park near Brighstone village, head uphill through the downs, and spend as long as you like wandering the ridge. Walkers absolutely get the most from it - expect something between 45 minutes and two hours depending on how far you fancy going. Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much at the summit to reward them.

It's free, naturally. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged - the chalk can hold moisture after rain and the paths get slippy. Early autumn is lovely, when you've got lower sun angles and fewer midges.

Fits nicely alongside other Wight walks if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Grange Farm and The Orchards are both within two miles. Use it as a morning leg before heading to the beach or the more dramatic western cliffs. The whole area around Newport works well for a mixed holiday: walkers get their downland routes, families get the coastal bits, and you're never more than twenty minutes from somewhere to eat.
