Mottistone Down Lime Kiln

Standing on the western downs above Brighstone, this Victorian lime kiln tells the story of the island's forgotten industrial past. Built into the hillside around 1860, the substantial stone structure was used to burn limestone and chalk to produce quicklime for local farmers and builders. The kiln's circular chamber and chimney remain remarkably intact, offering a proper glimpse into 19th-century island life.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the engineering on show here - the carefully constructed stonework and the way the kiln was built into the natural slope to aid loading from above. It's free to visit and you can walk right up to it, though there's no interpretation board to explain what you're looking at.

The real draw is the setting. Mottistone Down offers cracking views across the island's rural heart, with footpaths leading off in several directions. It's well worth combining with a walk to nearby Mottistone Manor or the Longstone ancient monument.

Families staying at Tapnell Farm or any of the western camping spots will find this makes a decent short walk, though it's probably only worth twenty minutes unless you're extending into a longer ramble. The access track from the road near Mottistone village is straightforward enough for most visitors.
