Limerstone Down

A proper chalk down that rises to 181 metres above the surrounding countryside, giving you some of the finest views across the Isle of Wight's interior. This isn't one of the island's flashier spots, but that's rather the point - you'll often have the summit to yourself, with just the sound of skylarks and wind through the grass for company.

The walk up takes about 20 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following well-worn paths through typical downland scenery. Once at the top, the 360-degree views stretch from the Solent in the north to the island's southern coast, with Newport visible in the valley below. It's particularly lovely on a clear day when you can pick out the mainland beyond.

Walkers and anyone seeking a bit of peace will get the most from Limerstone Down. Families with older children who don't mind a gentle climb will enjoy it too, though there's not much to entertain very young ones once you're up there. The open grassland makes it excellent for a picnic if you're prepared to carry supplies.

From nearby holiday parks like Tapnell Farm or The Orchards, it makes a cracking morning or evening walk. Allow a couple of hours if you want to take your time and really soak up those views. No facilities up here, so bring water and dress for the weather - it can be properly windy on the exposed summit.
