Broadford Lake

A shallow freshwater lake surrounded by woodland on the edge of Dartmoor, Broadford Lake is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's genuinely quiet - the kind of spot where you'll hear more birdsong than people talking. The water reflects the trees nicely enough, and there's a decent walking loop around the perimeter if you're after a proper leg-stretch without climbing hills.

This is decent territory for birdwatchers and anyone who appreciates wetland wildlife. You might spot dragonflies in summer, various ducks, and if you're lucky, something more interesting. The walk itself is manageable - nothing steep, largely flat, though it can get muddy after rain. Bring wellies or proper waterproof boots unless the weather's been scorching.

Truth is, you won't spend all afternoon here unless you're seriously into spotting species or photography. An hour, maybe ninety minutes tops, is the realistic window. But that's not a knock against it - sometimes a quick, peaceful detour beats another overcrowded attraction. It works well as a morning or late afternoon addition to a Dartmoor visit rather than a standalone draw.

The proximity to Okehampton means you can reach it easily from Wolf Wood Treehouses or Lydford Caravan & Camping Park if you're basing yourself nearby. Either would make a good jumping-off point for exploring this corner of Devon. Free access, no facilities that I'm aware of, and that's rather the appeal.
