Shelley’s Field

The moorland here unfolds in proper wild fashion - a scattering of ancient trees, rough grassland, and the kind of open views that remind you why Devon's inland stretches deserve more attention than the coast hogs. Shelley's Field sits near Okehampton and delivers exactly what you'd want from a nature reserve without the visitor centre marketing nonsense.

Walking is the main event. The paths wind through habitat that supports everything from adders to rare birds, though you won't find crowds of twitchers with telescopes. It's genuinely quiet. The field itself opens onto moorland proper, and on a clear day the Tors rise up in the distance - real landscape rather than scenery. Most people spend ninety minutes to two hours here without feeling rushed.

Families with kids who can manage uneven ground will find it engaging. There's enough space to let them roam without losing sight of them, and the wildness of the place tends to grip younger minds more than manicured nature reserves do. History buffs will note the field has its share of Bronze Age remains scattered about, though they're subtle.

If you're staying at Wolf Wood Treehouses just down the road, this works as a proper morning or afternoon walk that doesn't demand the full moorland expedition. No facilities on-site that I could find, so bring water. Free to access, or at least it was when I visited. The best time is spring or early autumn - summer can be a bit rank with insects, and winter turns it genuinely boggy.
