Brooklands Museum

The banking and racing heritage of early 20th-century Britain is laid out across Brooklands Museum, just outside Addlestone in Surrey. What you're walking around is the actual site of the world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit, opened in 1907 - the concrete banking is still there, crumbling gently but unmistakably real. The museum itself occupies the old aerodrome buildings, and it's a proper rabbit hole for anyone who cares about engineering history. You'll see vintage cars, motorcycles, and aircraft restored to working order. Some of the machines actually run during special events, which transforms the place entirely.

This appeals most to petrolheads and engineering enthusiasts rather than casual day-trippers. Kids can get through it in an hour or so; adults with genuine interest will stay two or three hours minimum. The aeronautical side is particularly strong - Brooklands produced aircraft throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and there's enough technical detail here to satisfy the serious history buff without patronising anyone less obsessive.

It's not the sort of place you'd drive hours to reach, but it absolutely justifies a visit if you're in the area already. The site itself - those banking curves visible between the buildings - is worth the admission price alone for transport enthusiasts.
