Broom Hill

Rolling countryside stretches in all directions from this modest County Durham summit, offering proper views without the slog of a proper mountain climb. Broom Hill sits just outside Durham city, making it an easy target for families staying at nearby caravan parks who fancy a bit of fresh air without driving miles into the Pennines.

The walk up is gentle enough for most fitness levels - certainly easier than anything you'll find in the Yorkshire Dales proper. From the top, you get a decent panorama of the Durham countryside, with the cathedral city visible on clear days. It's not spectacular, mind you, but it does the job if you're after a short morning hike.

Kids will manage this one fine, though don't expect them to be overly impressed by the views. The real appeal is the exercise and the chance to stretch legs if you're based at one of the local parks like Durham Grange or Finchale Abbey. Allow about an hour for the round trip, including time at the summit.

Best tackled in decent weather when visibility allows you to actually see something from the top. It's a nice enough addition to a Durham area holiday, particularly if you're planning visits to the cathedral or castle and want to balance indoor attractions with outdoor time.
