Brown Bank

Brown Bank is a modest fell just north of Skipton that won't set your heart racing, but it's a useful little walk if you're camping in the Yorkshire Dales. The summit sits at 438 metres and gives you views across the surrounding moorland - nothing that'll make you abandon the Lake District, but solid enough for an afternoon outing.

You're looking at about ninety minutes up and down from the nearest car park, depending on your fitness and how often you stop for photos. The terrain is straightforward moorland walking rather than technical stuff, so it suits families with older kids and anyone after a gentle leg-stretch without serious commitment. Spring and early autumn are best - the moors can get bog-heavy after rain and the wind can be brutal in winter.

What makes Brown Bank worthwhile is its location. If you're based at Coxons Farm Glamping Pods or Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's practically on your doorstep - both within three or four miles. You could easily rope it into a day that includes wandering round the Bolton Abbey ruins or tackling something more ambitious in the Dales. On its own, though, it's not a reason to drive north from Manchester.

Free to access, obviously - there's no charging structure for fell walking in this part of Yorkshire. Bring decent boots because the ground gets soft in places, and don't assume the weather will stay pleasant just because it looks clear from the campsite. I've seen the cloud roll in faster here than anywhere else in the Dales.
