Brownhart Law

The walk up Brownhart Law rewards you with proper views across the Northumberland hills, though it's not a particularly gentle climb. Starting near Otterburn, you'll head through moorland that feels genuinely remote - the kind of place where you won't see many other walkers even on weekends. The summit isn't dramatic in the Alpine sense, but the 365-metre high point gives you sight lines right across the Cheviot range and down into the Border Forest area.

It's a solid two to three hour round trip depending on your pace and where you start from. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, so decent boots matter. Families with young kids would find it a slog rather than a joy, but teenagers who enjoy a proper moorland hike will get something genuine from it. There's no café or facilities up top - just you, the wind, and the view.

What makes it work is the isolation. You're not queuing for photos or dodging crowds. If you're staying at Border Forest Holiday Park, it's under five miles away and makes a satisfying half-day outing. Go in clear weather though - the moorland gets genuinely bleak when the mist rolls in, and navigation becomes trickier. Free to access, obviously, since there's nothing to pay at a fell walk. No special facilities either, so bring water and something to eat.
