Whitelee Moor National Nature Reserve

The wind hits you properly when you reach the top of Whitelee Moor - there's no mucking about up here. This is open moorland between Otterburn and the Scottish border, raw and honest, the sort of place where you notice weather instead of ignoring it. The reserve sprawls across rough grassland and heather, with visibility for miles if the clouds stay put. On a clear day you're looking across the Pennines towards the Cheviot Hills. Walkers get the most from it. This isn't a quick stop with an ice cream afterwards - you need proper boots and at least two hours to make sense of the terrain. The paths are straightforward enough but boggy in places, and there's no rushing these moorlands. You'll see grouse, maybe a mountain hare if you're lucky. Birdwatchers come for the upland species, though honestly you need to know what you're listening for. Families with younger kids might find the walk a bit relentless and the views too abstract - it's not Disneyland scenery. It works brilliantly as part of a wider Northumberland walking holiday, particularly if you're based nearby at Border Forest Holiday Park. The moor reveals itself slowly, which is either exactly what you want from a day out or completely tedious, depending on your mindset. Most people stay local after - Otterburn is the nearest town for lunch.
