Rolling hills rather than dramatic peaks define this corner of Snowdonia, and Bryn Cwellyn sits quietly among them like a well-kept secret. The walk up rewards you with proper views across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey, though it's hardly the most challenging climb you'll tackle in North Wales.

Families with older children will find it manageable - the gradient's steady rather than punishing. Serious hikers might consider it a gentle warm-up before tackling Snowdon itself, but there's something to be said for a peak that doesn't leave you gasping for breath every fifty yards.

From the summit, Caernarfon spreads out below, its castle walls clearly visible on clear days. The view takes in a fair chunk of the Welsh coast, making it well worth the two-hour round trip. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on what looks like a promising morning.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Talymignedd or Beddgelert puts you within easy striking distance. It's the sort of walk that sets you up nicely for a proper pub lunch afterwards - not too strenuous, but enough to earn your pint. Definitely one for the 'pleasant afternoon out' category rather than epic adventure, but sometimes that's exactly what you're after.
