Mynydd Mawr

From the summit of this 633-metre peak, the views stretch across to Anglesey and back towards Snowdonia's higher ridges. Mynydd Mawr sits just outside Caernarfon and offers a proper hill walk without the crowds that plague more famous peaks nearby. The ascent takes most people around two hours and rewards you with surprisingly expansive panoramas given its modest height.

Walkers who enjoy a decent challenge but don't fancy tackling something like Snowdon will find this spot just right. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Early morning starts work best - you'll often have the summit to yourself before 10am.

Families with older children who are used to longer walks might manage it, though the younger ones will definitely struggle with the distance and some of the steeper sections. It's free to access year-round, naturally, though winter conditions can make it treacherous without proper kit.

If you're staying at one of the campsites around Llanberis or Beddgelert, this makes a cracking day out. The drive from either base takes about 20 minutes, and you'll be back in time for an afternoon exploring Caernarfon Castle or the Snowdon Railway. Not Wales's most dramatic peak, but well worth the effort for views that go on for miles.
