Foel Rûdd

Standing at 573 metres, this craggy Snowdonian peak offers one of the finest viewpoints over Caernarfon and the Menai Strait without the tourist hordes of its famous neighbours. The climb from the nearest car park takes around an hour and a half up a well-defined but occasionally steep path through typical Welsh hill country - bracken, sheep, and the odd abandoned stone wall.

Serious walkers will appreciate the relatively quiet approach compared to Snowdon's circus atmosphere, though families with young children might find the final scramble to the summit a bit much. The views north towards Anglesey are properly spectacular on a clear day, with Caernarfon Castle visible as a toy fort far below.

Most people combine Foel Rûdd with other peaks in the area - it's part of the Nantlle Ridge for those doing the full traverse. Allow three to four hours for a comfortable there-and-back walk.
