Bryn Tanerdy

The walk up Bryn Tanerdy takes you to one of Carmarthenshire's quieter summits, and that's precisely what makes it worth the effort. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Brecon Beacons showstoppers further north - but the views across the rolling farmland and towards the Black Mountains are genuinely good, especially on a clear day when you can see proper distance.

You'll want to allow a couple of hours for the ascent and descent at a leisurely pace, though stronger walkers can knock it out in less. The terrain is straightforward moorland and field paths, nothing technical, which means families with older kids and regular hill-goers alike will find it manageable. Bring proper boots though - the ground gets boggy in places, and there's no marked track to speak of.

Walking types will get the most from this one. The summit itself isn't cluttered with tourist infrastructure - there's no café, no visitor centre, no merchandise stall. You get what you came for: space, air, and views. It's genuinely quiet up there, which is rare enough these days to feel almost like a privilege.

Combine it with a base at one of the nearby farms - Quarry Lodge Campsite sits just three miles away near Carmarthen, making it an easy evening walk back to a proper meal and a fire pit. Weather permitting, aim for autumn when the light turns golden and the crowds thin out further.
