Buckiebank Plantation

You'll find yourself surrounded by towering conifers the moment you step into Buckiebank Plantation, just outside Lockerbie. It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured woodland stroll - the kind of place where you can actually lose yourself for an hour or two without bumping into crowds.

The plantation spreads across decent acreage with a mix of established trees and younger growth, creating varied landscapes as you move through. Paths wind through the dense cover, and on a grey Scottish day - which is most days - there's something genuinely atmospheric about it. Light filters through in patches, and you'll spot the occasional clearing that opens up views across the surrounding countryside.

Walkers will get the most from Buckiebank. It's not a casual twenty-minute amble; you'll want proper boots and at least two hours if you're planning to explore properly. Families with younger kids might find it a bit monotonous after a while - there's no playgrounds or visitor facilities that we can see, just trees and paths. But for anyone who enjoys a genuine forest experience without the tourist infrastructure, it works well.
