Bucks Copse

The woods around Bucks Copse offer proper woodland walking without the fuss of a managed nature reserve. It's forest in the truest sense - dense, quiet, and the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The trees here are thick enough that even on a drizzly day it feels sheltered, and there's a genuine sense of getting away from the world despite being only a few miles outside Hungerford.

Walking through feels like old England. Paths wind between mature trees, the ground is soft with years of leaf litter, and you'll spot the odd fallen log acting as a natural bench. There's no visitor centre, no marked trails with difficulty ratings, just forest. That's either brilliant or boring depending on what you want from a walk. Families with young kids might find it a bit undirected after thirty minutes or so, but serious walkers and anyone keen on woodland botany will be in their element. In spring the bluebells are worth the trip alone.

No idea about admission or opening hours - it appears to be accessible woodland rather than a formal attraction, which means it's free and you can turn up whenever. Allow an hour to two hours depending on how lost you want to get. The real win is combining it with nearby Lorne Hill Farm or Rhodeside Caravan Club - both five-star parks within striking distance - then using the copse for morning or late-afternoon walks. Not somewhere you'll spend a full day, but absolutely worth working into a wider Berkshire trip if you like forest air.
